Disgraceful Labor Reaches New Low: Using The Death Of An Australian Soldier As A Political Tool

4 June 2009

‘I move that according to contingent notice, that standing and cessional orders be moved forthwith to allow...the order of precedence relating to the condolence motion on soldiers killed in Afghanistan be called on forthwith'
Labor MP Michael Veitch, Upper House, June 4
‘This relates to the death of one of our brave soldiers and should be given due reverence, it should not be used as a political tactic to delay an important Bill that's before the House'
Duncan Gay, Upper House, June 4

Shadow Minister for Industry and Leader of the Nationals in the Legislative Council Duncan Gay today joined his Upper House Coalition colleagues in expressing disgust at the abominable tactics used by State Labor in the House.

"A proper condolence motion that deserved the utmost respect and reverence was used today in an attempt to delay debate on a Bill that the weak Rees Labor Government felt politically embarrassed about," said Mr Gay.

"The NSW Parliament has a good, strong and democratic set of rules and official processes in place.

"Today Labor tried to twist and bend those, in the ugliest way possible, for their own selfish political advantage.

"Upper House Labor Members should hang their heads in shame at this show.

"Sadly this example doesn't come as a surprise as this incompetent Government continues to put political spin ahead of the most important issues affecting people in NSW.

"This latest tactic by Labor shows how misguided their priorities are, when working either in Parliament or out in the community.

"The NSW Liberal/Nationals believe in being open and honest with the NSW public and we will continue to hold the Rees Labor Government to account."
